Seniors and pets: Keeping them together, at home

Staying active – For many seniors, having a pet is motivation to get moving. Whether it’s a dog that needs a walk or a cat demanding its breakfast, a pet is an outside force that makes them get up and get going. Active pet ownership has been linked to lower body mass index; fewer reported doctor visits and fewer limitations on their activities of daily living.

Stress relief – Studies show that pet owners, overall, have lower blood pressure, lower resting heart rates and a less dramatic change in heart rate and blood pressure in response to stress.

Companionship – One of the biggest triggers for senior depression is loneliness. A pet’s companionship can satisfy the longing for company and affection for seniors who live alone — and spur a common topic of conversation for couples who may otherwise sit in silence.

Sense of purpose – When your pet depends on you for food, exercise and companionship, it gives you a reason to get up in the morning, get out into the community or just stroll around the neighborhood. It helps seniors establish and maintain a routine. Studies show that seniors with a sense of purpose are more physically active, take better care of their health and are less susceptible to stress. They also may be less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive impairments, heart attacks or strokes and may even live longer.
